I’m 2012, my friend Chris lost his lifelong battle with mental illness. Chris was a father, a Gulf War Veteran who served his country in the US Air Force, and one of the best human beings to ever cross my path. Like many others who have been touched by suicide, I spoke with Chris just two hours before his death and when he said “I’ll call you later”, I never could have imagined that “later” wouldn’t be coming. Though we had talked about his sickness on many occasions throughout our 22 year friendship, I didn’t realize how hopeless he had become in the days surrounding his death.
Since Chris’s death, I have found healing in making it my mission to help to spread the word about suicide prevention and mental illness. To also change the stigmas that surrounds these terrible afflictions of the mind and suicide itself. I fight for Chris and all the others that no longer can.
I myself struggle with depression and anxiety, but have been lucky enough to find great treatment and support. My life has forever been changed by admitting that I was not strong enough to fight on my own. It is my hope that one day people will feel free to talk more openly about their struggles so that they may find the light in the world that I have.
I chose to join a hike with HIKE for Mental Health to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails.
