I chose to join a hike with HIKE for Mental Health: Summit Mt. Washington! to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails. It’s the perfect challenge for me since it combines three things I’m passionate about – hiking, mental health, and conservation of trails!!
Every few years I am crazy enough to find a challenge that will really push me to break thru some of the limits I place on myself. Even as I write this I’m questioning my sanity, my ability, my strength?? Not only will Mt. Washington be the highest elevation I’ve ever attempted, it will be with a large group of people, and I know no one in that group. I’ve done long hikes before, so the distance doesn’t worry me. But I only ever solo hike or with Arnold because I’m often embarrassed of my pace, of my appearance, of my whatever silly thought pops into my head next. Hiking with others may the biggest challenge of this whole event.
That self doubt stems from a place of mental illness (depression and anxiety) and I’m participating in the HIKE for Mental Health to break that down, to help end the stigma of mental illness, and in the process help address the stigma of what a hiker “should” look like!
I hope you will support this journey and follow along!
