First Day Hikes: Get Outside On January 1!
The History Of First Day Hikes
First Day Hikes began in 1992 in Massachusetts. The concept was created by Patrick Flynn, the former supervisor for the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Massachusetts just outside of Boston. He developed First Day Hikes as a way to get people into the parks during the winter months. On January 1, 1992, he led the first hike where 380 people showed up for the inaugural First Day Hikes at the Blue Hills State Reservation. Many state parks in Massachusetts, and then in other states, followed the idea and started running their own First Day Hikes programs. January 1 has become synonymous with First Day Hikes, helping to promote our beautiful park lands and winter recreation, and foster healthy lifestyles. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks. Since 2012, First Day Hikes have been held in all 50 states. On New Year’s Day hundreds of hikes will be organized in every state.
